AI is improving mobile Apps in dramatic ways. There are Camera Apps like FaceApp and the new Not From Earth App (close to launch), that rely heavily on Artificial Intelligence. But is it possible for AI to help solve the problem of human aging? You might be surprised to learn of the extensive research in this field.

FaceApp - Is This Love From Russia Safe?

*IMPORTANT* This Russian App should be banned from the App Store while Russia invades Ukraine. 

With over 100 million downloads, FaceApp is a viral App sensation from Russia that works on both IOS and Android. There is an assortment of filters and effects found in most photo editing apps, but this App has gone ballistic because of its remarkable face transformation features.

Here's a list of alterations available: Impressions, Smiles, Beards, Gender (weird), Face Swap, Age, Hair Styles, Hair Colors, Face Sizes, Glasses, Makeup, Retouch, and then filters. 

It also provides a way to isolate the person and change the background. This comes from their DeepAI  segmentation model. 

 

Impressive right?

So what is the big concern about security with this App? Well, there is a general distrust of Facial Recognition and sharing of altered face images. This kind of face editing requires advanced AI  recognition and alteration. Skeptics also say that facial recognition is one of the tools that our government might use to bypass human rights and individual privacy and that it has the potential for identity theft.  

To be honest, I love this App. And there are hundreds of Apps now, include those from Apple, that alter faces for entertainment. I don't believe this is an issue with most Apps. And so what if this App comes from Russia? Well, there is one problem that I'm concerned about. How does this App work its magic? What is the technology behind this remarkable App?

The magic is in the use of AI models like segmentation, face recognition, and the application of effects and styles. I have no problem with any of that cool technology, but I didn't see how these models were installed. So I decided to disconnect my phone from the internet. Whoops! Here is the message I got. 

So to process your face images, those images need to be sent off to Russia With Love where they are processed, not on your phone, but on a distant server. For me, that is a bit of a problem. There is some security risk when your personal image data is uploaded to an unknown server. 

But I guess I'm willing to take that risk for now because the App is so much fun to use. But if you are at work or using someone else's images, you should probably find an App that does its magic on your own device. 

I should mention that this App is free but they charge for what they call their Pro features like more effects; and most of their features are Pro features. You will also need their Pro version to get rid of the FaceApp watermark.

Fix That Obnoxious Blinking Cursor

Years ago I wrote a utility called NoBlink Accelerator for Windows. If you are like me, you will want to stop the constant blinking cursor so you can concentrate on the subject. 👀  

Here's the fix for any Mac including one running Big Sur:

Open Terminal and enter these commands:

defaults write -g NSTextInsertionPointBlinkPeriod -float -1

defaults write -g NSTextInsertionPointBlinkPeriodOn -float 4000

defaults write -g NSTextInsertionPointBlinkPeriodOff -float 100

This should work on most Mac OS Applications.

Here's the fix in Windows

In keyboard properties, adjust the slider of Text Cursor blink rate as per your choice.

The Art of Self Publishing

I wrote an article on Medium for Self-Publishing.

Based on my efforts, I wrote down helpful steps, tips and told about the tools and websites you need to know about and how to use them.

Magic 3D Cameras. How do they work?

A dual lens camera, like that on the back of an iPhone X, uses the lens separation to detect a parallax shift to measure 3D depth? Objects closer to the camera, shift by a greater distance between the two lenses. This parallax shift, based on distance, is called disparity. 

Then how does the single lens front-facing camera measure depth? This technology is called TrueDepth. You might be surprised to know that the TrueDepth camera projects an infrared light pattern in front of the camera. By observing how the pattern is distorted by objects in front of the camera lens, the snapshot software calculates the distance from the camera to each point in the image. From this, it creates its own disparity. 

Both technologies then generate a secondary image of depth pixels. But instead of each pixel representing a color, the pixels represent depth at that point. By combining a depth map with colors it is possible to blur or even make transparent parts of a photo such as the background of a portrait.

Generate an Android App from your YouTube Videos Channel

There's an Android App (APK) builder called AppGeyser that has an option for turning your YouTube videos channel into an Android APK. This seems like a great way to get more subscribers.

Just click this AppGeyser link and select Start Now. Then in the template search box, enter "you" and select YouTube, like so:

You will be asked to enter the URL of your Youtube Channel and then it will generate an APK. They also make it easy to publish your App to Google Play. 

However, even if you don't have an Android device you can fully test your App with a technology called BlueStacks. For example, here's a download for a Mac version of BlueStacks. Test your generated Android Apps in BlueStacks on a Mac or PC and then publish it to Google Play.

Conclusion: The App works well. It is using the latest in CoreML Image recognition technologies. I like the App for exploring Rain Forests in Kauai. The App is a lot of fun and of course educational.

Star KIC 8462852 was thought to be a star encased in a Dyson Sphere because of its periodic dimming. But then NASA scientists said the dimming is just an orbiting cloud of dust because the light spectrum did not dim equally. That is a strange conclusion. Aliens smart enough to encase a star but not smart enough to filter the light they want to capture?

We have a Beta Copy of the Not From Earth App  The App is scheduled for release in March of 2019. NFE claims to detect alien visitors using advanced AI and image recognition. It then unmasks the alien, providing a glimpse of their appearance using style transfer effects. The App includes hundreds of free Alien Transfer Effects or ATEs. 

The coders have managed to combine Style Transfer Effects with Depth Masks.

Best Camera did a review on all the top Camera Apps and none of them had this cool style transfer and depth mask combination technology. 

The developers are busy training the image recognition and style transfer models. So far the App is easy and fun to use. Just snapshot individuals or even crowds and NFE will find the Alien and zoom in. Social sharing is included so you can warn others of discovered aliens walking among us. If everyone with a cell phone has this App, we have a fighting chance. 

"Best Pickup App Ever!" according to a beta tester in Santa Monica who went alien hunting on the beach with the App.
